The Sabbath Is Holy

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. Exodus 20:8-11 NKJV.

The Lord began talking to me about the Sabbath last Summer. It was a hot hot day and I was mowing our grass at the lake property that Troy and I own and quite enjoy. We consider it a very relaxing get a way that for us is less then an hour to get to. We so enjoy the sunsets, the fishing, the campfires and camp-outs we have there. Anyway, as I was mowing my thoughts were not focused on the Lord. I wasn’t praying. This is when I heard a soft voice that I recognize as the Holy Spirit whisper to me “You are working on My Sabbath”. As I pondered the Sabbath and what it truly meant I realized that it was a Saturday the Lord whispered this to me. And though I just always assumed that it was OK that at the Sabbath was substituted on Sunday something deep in me felt unease about it.

I shared with Troy what I heard and we both began thinking more about it. At the first of this year the Lord began directing my heart to really study His word in a completely new way. What is the Sabbath and why did God command that we rest on this day particular day? It doesn’t take long to identify that God instituted the Sabbath at creation. His Word is specific on why He chose the last day as a rest day.

The Sabbath is Saturday the seventh day of the week. The Jewish people still hold their worship and teachings on this day and the Sabbath begins at sundown on Friday and continues until Saturday at sundown. I asked the Lord what He wanted me to know about the Sabbath and I heard 3 distinct words. The first was Trust, Then Faith, then Obedience.

Trust during the Sabbath

As I began my yearly bible study the Sabbath was brought up multiple times from the very first books of the bible. The Israelite’s were told to gather double portion of food on the 6th day. At this time the Lord had given the children of Israel manna from heaven, a spiritual food that sustained them. This food that is described as a wafer like bread that would appear during the morning dew would be gathered. However it was only good for that day. If they tried to save it the food would become rotten, foul even. Except on the Sabbath. The food would be good for two days. This took trust, faith and obedience.

Who Changed The Sabbath Day?

As i began more research on the Sabbath day and why it was moved,

God was teaching the Israelite’s to trust in Him for all things through the Sabbath. If we look to Exodus 16 we see how God was going to provide for them.
